Debate of Alveolar Ridge Augmentation: Decision Tree and Challenges
By keeping the end in mind implant position should be directed by the final position of the ideal prosthetic restoration. Implant site need to be modified in case of presence of bone defects, horizontal bone defects or vertical bone defect that can be either due to loss in alveolar bone height or due to sinus pneumatization in upper posterior regions. Guided bone regeneration in the oral cavity is defined according to the American academy of Periodontology as “Procedures attempting to regenerate lost periodontal structures through different tissue responses, typically referring to ridge augmentation or bone regeneration procedures”. It can be done by either simultaneous or staged approach. Onlay bone grafting and ridge expansion are methods used to augment horizontal defects, ring block and distraction osteogenesis are used to augment vertical defects.
Objectives:
-Learn decision tree of different augmentation techniques.
– Understand key success factors of ridge augmentation.
– Identify different augmentation limitations.
