Efficacy of Psidium Guajava as a Minimally Invasive Adjunct to Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy
Periodontitis is a multifactorial disease in which the disease expression depends on the complex interplay between the biofilm and the host inflammatory immune responses resulting in different stages and grades of periodontitis. The use of natural bioactive products has therapeutic benefits such as antimicrobial, antioxidant anti-inflammatory and anti-collagenase while avoiding the systemic side effects. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of local application of of the adjunctive use of 3% P. guajava local drug delivery in different stages of periodontitis according to the 2017 classification of periodontal diseases and conditions. The following focused question was addressed: “In systemically healthy periodontitis patients, is the use of 3% P. guajava as an adjunct to periodontal debridement more effective than SRP alone in reducing probing pocket depth (PPD) and improving clinical attachment level as well as radiographic bone levels?” Guava has an anti-inflammatory action through inhibition of prostaglandin, kinin and histamin. It is also an excellent antioxidant by scavenging free radicals. This was a randomized controlled trial where in each patient, the treatment sites were randomly divided into the test and control sites by a computer-generated random table. The following parameters; Plaque Index, Bleeding on probing, probing pocket depth (PPD), and clinical attachment level (CAL) were recorded at baseline, one month and three months. Radiographs were taken at baseline and 3 months.
Objective:
The use of herbal products to treat periodontitis.
