Social media (SM) is a type of application based on the internet and web 2.0 technology and online environment where users can contribute to the content and consume content mostly generated by other users.
These platforms allow users to have conversations, share information and create web content. The use of social media is a part of digital communication which is currently very popular in the world now. it began to take shape in the1990s and rapidly gained popularity in the 2000s with the emergence of social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Social interactions gained the maximum usage in this era as the COVID-19 has imposed restrictions on the conduction of face-to-face epidemiological inquiries.
With an increasing dependence on social media in the field of paediatric dentistry, it becomes imperative that is increasingly being relied upon by paediatric dentists to make decisions.
Social media also has become ubiquitous in the daily lives of most youth and as use increases so do concerns about the impact of social media on mental health. While positive impacts of social media do exist, that’s why it is considered a double-Edged Sword.
with the increased exposure of children to social media and the introduction of devices at an early age, social media serves as a highly beneficial tool for paediatric dentists to spark interest in their oral well-being and familiarise them with dental operatory and procedures in a more conducive and positive manner to which they can relate.
