Professor of Restorative Dentistry, State University of Campinas, Brazil
Marcelo Giannini born on February 13, 1969, in the city of Araçatuba (São Paulo State – SP, Brazil). His father was Italian from the Tuscany region and his mother is a Japanese descendant, but she born in Brazil. After his father’s death, his family moved to Italy in 1973 along with his mother and brother. The following year, they returned to Brazil and then moved to the city of Campinas (SP), where they still live.
He became a Biochemistry Technician in 1987 and in 1989 started the Dentistry course at the Piracicaba Dental School at the State University of Campinas (FOP-UNICAMP, Piracicaba, SP, Brazil). He obtained his DDS degree in 1992, Master in 1997, and Ph.D. in 1999 in Clinical Dentistry. Marcelo’s current professional position is part-time (24 h), Full Professor at FOP-UNICAMP. He began his activities as a faculty at FOP-UNICAMP in 1995.
He coordinated the Graduate Program of Dental Materials during 2010-2014 and was the Chairman of the Department of Restorative Dentistry (2009-2010) at the same school. Marcelo has authored/co-authored 345 original research papers since 2000 and has been the recipient of several awards and honors. He was the supervisor and winner of two Paffenbarger Awards from the Academy of Dental Materials (ADM / 2004 and 2017). He actively participates and presents his research at the most important scientific meetings worldwide. He has advised numerous master (32) and PhD (23) students and is the recipient of several important grants from Brazilian Governmental Agencies. He serves as referees for several high-impact journals in dentistry and material sciences.
Marcelo has maintained a private dental practice 20 hours per week, besides intensive continuing education work. He has presented several abstracts, Lunch & Learn, participated in symposia, served as a referee or chair of IADR Kulzer Travel Award (2017-2019)
